RULES OF THE INTERNET

Ever since I heard the concept of rules for the internet, the idea fascinated me -- especially since this was before the internet was so centralized, there was a silent understanding that the internet was a generally lawless place.

However, I was very disappointed to find out that the most common full lists of rules for the internet were just references to a single website (and now that I'm rereading them, grossly outdated!).

In honor of younger me, I will be rewriting my own version for the Rules of the Internet (except for the important one), though since they're coming from me, they will be more advice-leaning.

  1. Be nice on the internet, there are other people on the other side of the screen; bullying and harassment doesn't help, even if they deserve it
  2. Corporations are not people, do not trust them
  3. Bots are not people, do not trust them
  4. Do not click on links from anyone you don't know, especially if you can type out the website yourself
  5. Do not give your personal information to anyone on the internet
  6. Do not give money to anyone you don't know
  7. If you do, then don't give away more money than you're OK with losing
  8. Do not click on ads
  9. Use an ad blocker
  10. Even if they tell you not to use ad blocker, use ad blocker anyway
  11. If you want to support them, use money, not ads
  12. Do not listen to anything that someone profits off saying
  13. If a corporation would profit off saying something, they will say it
  14. If a corporation would profit off doing something, they will do it
  15. If something is free on the internet, then either it is a scam, you are the product, or both
  16. Your information will be on the internet
  17. Do not click on email links when you can type it yourself, even if it seems like it's from someone you know
  18. Do not fall for the ragebait
  19. Do not reply to the ragebait
  20. Even if it is not meant to be ragebait, it is still ragebait
  21. Respect the furries, they run the internet
  22. Weird is what the internet is for
  23. Illegal is not what the internet is for
  24. You will see things you don't like
  25. Do not read the comments
  26. Do not talk to the sealions
  27. Do not join the discourse
  28. You do not have to reply
  29. You do not have to join the discussion
  30. All opinions are just opinions
  31. You can always just go outside
  32. Before you think about posting it, yes, they will see your post
  33. Stay off chat unless you're 18 or older
  34. If a character exists, there will be NSFW of them
  35. If there isn't, there will be
  36. Turn off the game if you are not having fun
  37. Don't delete system32
  38. You cannot download more ram
  39. If you don't want to see it, you can tolerate it or go somewhere else
  40. If you don't like something, don't look for it, because you will find it
