RULES OF THE INTERNET
July 25, 2026 - Published
Ever since I heard the concept of rules for the internet, the idea fascinated me -- especially since this was before the internet was so centralized, there was a silent understanding that the internet was a generally lawless place.
However, I was very disappointed to find out that the most common full lists of rules for the internet were just references to a single website (and now that I'm rereading them, grossly outdated!).
In honor of younger me, I will be rewriting my own version for the Rules of the Internet (except for the important one), though since they're coming from me, they will be more advice-leaning.
- Be nice on the internet, there are other people on the other side of the screen; bullying and harassment doesn't help, even if they deserve it
- Corporations are not people, do not trust them
- Bots are not people, do not trust them
- Do not click on links from anyone you don't know, especially if you can type out the website yourself
- Do not give your personal information to anyone on the internet
- Do not give money to anyone you don't know
- If you do, then don't give away more money than you're OK with losing
- Do not click on ads
- Use an ad blocker
- Even if they tell you not to use ad blocker, use ad blocker anyway
- If you want to support them, use money, not ads
- Do not listen to anything that someone profits off saying
- If a corporation would profit off saying something, they will say it
- If a corporation would profit off doing something, they will do it
- If something is free on the internet, then either it is a scam, you are the product, or both
- Your information will be on the internet
- Do not click on email links when you can type it yourself, even if it seems like it's from someone you know
- Do not fall for the ragebait
- Do not reply to the ragebait
- Even if it is not meant to be ragebait, it is still ragebait
- Respect the furries, they run the internet
- Weird is what the internet is for
- Illegal is not what the internet is for
- You will see things you don't like
- Do not read the comments
- Do not talk to the sealions
- Do not join the discourse
- You do not have to reply
- You do not have to join the discussion
- All opinions are just opinions
- You can always just go outside
- Before you think about posting it, yes, they will see your post
- Stay off chat unless you're 18 or older
- If a character exists, there will be NSFW of them
- If there isn't, there will be
- Turn off the game if you are not having fun
- Don't delete system32
- You cannot download more ram
- If you don't want to see it, you can tolerate it or go somewhere else
- If you don't like something, don't look for it, because you will find it
- People do not actually get cancelled, they get attention
- People will try to scam you
- People will try to get you angry
- People will try to get themselves angry
- The people who actually want to be your friend will be like you
